I visited Marcus Aurelius 2 days ago, here in Rome. He is larger than life, astride his horse, holding his right arm out in what feels like an acknowledgment and a blessing. It’s the ancient bronze equestrian sculpture that was found by early Christians and preserved from being melted down because they mistakenly believed it was Constantine, the first Christian Emperor. There is a copy of it atop the Michelangelo-designed Piazza Campidoglio, but inside the Capitoline Museum is the original, which almost feels alive. Anyone who visits Rome should go see both.
