Thank you! Epictetus!! Pretty cool guy! I am just now learning about the Greeks and the Stoics at age 67 and find it pretty fascinating! I did not realize for sure that he was a slave. I can not even imagine being “ owned” by someone or some thing. I am very possessive about my time but I do realize that all of it is a gift from God and a blessing! I try to be content and I am as far as material things go I don’t like a lot of stuff I don’t own a house and my possessions fit in my car. But yeah my car is my independence and I know that someday I won’t be driving. I am glad my mind is free and that is where I really concentrate now trying to see if I am thinking for myself or letting all the smoke and shadows obscure truth. Like how you have this site set up. I was surprised to see my name. Peace friend.

Really some grounding thoughts there. Thanks for sharing. It might be abnormal or thought of as being condemning of a current topic; however its not meant to be so. I agree in essence with what you wrote. I however connect the earthly notions of the early philosophy to my freedom I have in Christ as my Lord and Savior. For me understanding and having a relationship with a loving Lord and Savior takes a lifetime to understand, (although we cannot fully understand, it's a process), is real freedom.

Thank you for this. As someone who is on a road of recovery from addiction, achieving small but incremental steps towards freedom over the last five years, co-dependancy keeps rearing its persistent head. I found this article very useful in that respect. Diolch

the freedom-through-less-dependence angle is the one that sticks. most people chase freedom by adding options, epictetus says subtract the need for them.

I find it curious that we, personally, have never been free in any form. We are given choices, given. The choices are provided. For goodness sakes they are shooting you full of god knows what the moment you come out of the womb. We know no true freedom. Most of us anyway.

Nice. It's true that freedom has its own cost.

Freedom isn’t free. Nothing is.

Very Stoic. I get your feed as you see fit. For this one, I actually read. Very good. Thank you.

I love your work!

I have been a practicing Stoic for years.

I have found it to be a gamechanger in my life.

It has taught me to respect myself more as well as respecting others.

It have saved me from the energy drain cycle. I am responsible for myself and my actions-not other peoples.

My father passed a little over a year ago. I have been thinking about how he raised me and and his approach to life.

I am not 100 percent sure but I believe he (and my grandfather) modeled their lives and approach to problems using Stoic practices.

Living by these practices makes my life flow. I walk in my strength. I have a sense of agency.

I respect other peoples opinions and choices.

Warmly,

Carol
