I love this. I feel like conflict often gets confused with dysfunction, when in reality the opposite can be true. Healthy conflict is almost like organizational maintenance, because a small conflict today helps avoid much bigger ones down the line (whereas peace achieved through avoidance can be shockingly violent in the medium to long run). Not all conflict is destructive!
I think that as a society, we’ve started seeing every minor disagreement as stirring the pot. Most of the time, we’re simply having misguided discussions while holding opposing views, and no one is willing to consider the other’s perspective. Even trying to communicate negative feelings that someone’s actions have caused us is often interpreted as craving conflict, rather than an attempt to resolve it.
We like people who avoid conflict by any means necessary because they allow us to hold on to the version of ourselves we have in our minds, the one where we’re always right.
I don’t think our ‘free will’ is all that free, we are conditioned to a large extent. If my actions disappoint, frustrate or hurt others - it is their problem to deal with, not mine.
“People need to know where you stand.” Well said. It reminds me of the quote, a friend of everyone is a friend to no one. Paraphrasing.
