“Does anything genuinely beautiful need supplementing?...Are any of those improved by being praised? Or damaged by contempt? Is an emerald suddenly flawed if no one admires it?”

Praise is addictive. And if untamed, it becomes a vicious cycle.

Seeking it profusely makes us lose the purpose of why we work, why we study, why we stay fit, why we build good relationships with our family and friends.
